Pelcomb & Dreenhill, Saturday 12th December 2020
It was a lovely dry winters day,you may say unusual of late which saw a group of twenty walkers set out from the lower race course car park in Haverfordwest for a circular walk, along tracks and muddy paths with a short section that may be slightly flooded! This was not the case as it turned out!
There was lots of socially distanced chatter as we set off along the route towards the Cricket club and out onto the Haven Road. The route was to pass the Rising sun and later the Mason Arms, and no this was not a pub crawl! They were all closed anyway , COVID restrictions!
We walked down the hill passed Highgrove care home, along the track, newly laid with rough stone to the main Haverfordwest to Newgate road at Pelcomb Bridge. Then on towards Cuckoo Mill farm, where you could have stopped and collected a turkey for Christmas.
As we made our way through a short wooded section and out onto rolling fields, the rural views were remarked on by many as we were so close to Haverfordwest town , who would have thought just a mile out there would be such views . The route then took in the Solar farm and on to Cuckoo grove farm before a short stretch along fields to Sutton lodge , for sale for over a million apparently !
A lunch stop in the hidden gem of woods at Portfield gate provided some good seating and time to catch up with friends , all socially distanced, plenty of room to spread out here beside the pond.
Onwards on the bridle way, along rather muddy and boggy patches as we made our way from Portfield gate to Dreenhill! A brief stop to see some long horn cattle took the interest of all, they however were rather shy! They gave us a brief respite before further waterlogged paths took us down towards Merlins Brook , through a delightful wood of deciduous tress before a short stretch of road . Turning into the woods with trepidation, the stream thankfully had not overflowed its banks too much ! All navigated their way around the stream with great care. The last part of the walk returned us through the woods to upper Glenover where we crossed the road back into the lower race course. We followed the edge of the field, crossed the main Haverfordwest to Dale road and and walked the outer race course in its entirety before returning via a track to the car park.
